Micro Weddings: A Photographer's Perspective

A Wedding Photographer's List of Things to Know about Micro Weddings and Intimate Celebrations

As a wedding photographer, I have the privilege of capturing some of the most beautiful and memorable days in people's lives. I have photographed weddings of all sizes, from intimate ceremonies with just a few guests to grand celebrations with hundreds of attendees. While I love the variety that comes with photographing weddings of all shapes and sizes, I have a special fondness for small and micro weddings.

There are many benefits to choosing a small or micro wedding, both for the couple and for the vendors involved. In this blog post, I will discuss some of the benefits of small and micro weddings from the perspective of a wedding photographer to help you decide if this might be a great fit for you.

Micro Weddings: A Photographer's Perspective

More value for your financial investment

One of the biggest benefits of small and micro weddings is that they can be more affordable than traditional weddings. With a smaller guest count, couples can often afford to splurge on luxury options that might be out of reach with a larger wedding. A couple may be able to afford a destination wedding, a high-end venue, luxe floral installations, or a gourmet meal for a small group of guests. Want to curate bespoke favors for your guests? Micro weddings may be the key to making a meaningful heirloom for your loved ones in attendance, such as the beautiful hand-bound and monogrammed book of Shakespeare's Sonnets created for Fain and Alyssa (pictured here).

As photography is considered, my mico wedding couples often find that fewer hours of coverage are needed. With fewer moving parts and small or no bridal parties, the less complex day often means that a gallery full of lush and romantic moments can be captured in around 4 hours. This frequently means that budget is available for a beautifully produced album and premium fine art prints. Micro weddings often mean that these lifelong heirlooms are within reach where they likely would not have been before.

Less planning time needed + planning sustainable events

Another benefit of small and micro weddings is that they often require less planning time than traditional weddings. With fewer guests to accommodate, couples can streamline the planning process and focus on the details that matter most to them. This can be a huge relief for couples who are already stressed out by the wedding planning process.

I would also add that small and micro weddings are a great option for couples who want to have a more sustainable wedding. With fewer guests and less waste, small and micro weddings can have a much smaller environmental footprint than traditional weddings. If mindful use of physical resources is a priority for you as a couple, a small wedding is a great option to consider.

More quality time with guests

One of the best things about small and micro weddings is that they allow couples to spend more quality time with their guests. With fewer people to mingle with, couples can have meaningful conversations and create lasting memories with their loved ones. This is especially important for couples who want to have a relaxed and intimate wedding day.

If a marathon of trying to greet each guest sounds overwhelming, you may want to consider a guest count of 50 or less. This volume of guests would guarentee quality time being able to truly converse with each loved one in attendence.

Often more peaceful wedding planning with a less complex day

Small and micro weddings are often less stressful to plan than traditional weddings. With fewer moving parts, couples can avoid the chaos and stress that often accompanies large weddings. This can make the wedding planning process much more enjoyable and peaceful.

This also allows the ability to incorporate more intimate touches on the day. Couples of mine who have hosted micro weddings have been able to write personal notes to each guest in favors and on placecards. These meaningful acknowledgements of the loved ones in attendence never fail to add poignance and love into the celebration in a very real way.

Small and micro weddings are a beautiful and affordable way to celebrate your love. If you are considering a small or micro wedding, I encourage you to talk to your wedding planner and photographer about the benefits of this type of wedding.
